Cyclists (90s Lifesavers)
/PART OF THE 90 SECOND LIFESAVER CAMPAIGN
Introduction: In this scenario, the cyclist is the more vulnerable road user but in the first scenes they aren’t helping themselves be seen by wearing dark coloured clothing. In addition, we have a car driving too fast for residential roads, with passengers and music adding to driver distraction. When drivers are more concerned with what’s happening inside the car, they are less likely to look further ahead and spot hazards. In this instance, inappropriate speed means the car closes on the cyclist as he approaches a pinch-point in the road, causing the driver to take evasive action in the form of a swerve.
Driver distraction is also a key factor in the second scene, where she misses the cyclist at the junction, causing him to collide with the car bonnet. In this instance, our driver should have looked twice at the junction as this would have helped her spot the cyclist, despite him wearing dark coloured clothing. So, the key factors at play in this scenario are driver distraction, excess speed, visibility of vulnerable road users and always looking twice at junctions. Also, there is a subtler point about the importance of wearing a cycle helmet.
