Introduction: In this branching application funded by Warwickshire County Council, viewers are on the shoulder of a young boy as he walks to school for one of the first times – initially he’s accompanied by an older girl who lives nearby, but she forgets her PE kit, leaving him to face the journey alone.

Along the way, he encounters various challenges, such as whether to take a dangerous shortcut or answer a call from his mum just before negotiating a busy crossing. The viewer gets to choose which branch to take and watch the outcome of their decision – when the girl catches up just before the school gates, she’s carrying either a blue or a red PE bag, depending on whether the viewer has made predominantly safe or unsafe choices. This provides a discrete way for facilitators to follow up, without the viewer having to announce a ‘higher risk’ rating.
