Pedestrians (90s Lifesavers)

PART OF THE 90 SECOND LIFESAVER CAMPAIGN

Introduction: Sometimes as pedestrians, we get distracted looking down at our phones, which reduces our alertness to hazards and awareness of the landscape. In this example, not only was our pedestrian distracted by looking at his phone, he’d also reduced his ability to hear traffic by wearing big over ear headphones. So, when it came to crossing the road, he assumed it would be safe and only glanced over his shoulder quickly when already committed to putting a foot out in the road. Had he been concentrating on his surroundings, he would have seen the crossing and/or heard the car. Of course, he may have seen the crossing originally but just been impatient – this is something for viewers to contemplate.

Although our driver was wearing her seatbelt and driving at an appropriate speed, she chose to take a call on hands free. And whilst this is technically legal, in the first clip we see how much it impeded her reaction times when a pedestrian starts to cross the road unexpectedly. Had she not been so preoccupied with her call, she may have seen him start to move towards the edge of the pavement slowed down a little in anticipation.
