Virtual Reality Hazard Perception research project launches new app

Nottingham Trent University has launched Hazard Perception VR, a free app that can be downloaded from the Oculus Store for Oculus Go headsets. The app is sponsored by the Road Safety Trust, the RAC Foundation and the DVSA, and is part of a research study investigating the next generation of hazard perception assessment and training materials. By downloading the app, users can take part in a research study that asks their opinions about the future of hazard perception assessment.

Taking part in the study requires users to provide some details about their driving history, before they get to try two tests. The tests assess and train the skill that lies at the heart of hazard perception: Hazard Prediction. The clips occlude just as the hazard begins to appear and viewers are asked, “What happens next?” If they were looking in the right place at the right time, they will be able to choose the correct answer. The research study takes approximately 20 minutes to complete, but after that, the library of feedback clips is unlocked and users can view the clips at their leisure while improving their awareness of hazardous situations on the road.

The app is provided free of charge and you can sign-up through the oculus store searching for ‘Hazard Perception VR’ or by following the link here: Oculus Store
